On the map, you can display various parameters as area averages for different regions and time periods. An area average (spatial mean) is not a single value of a specific weather station, but a value averaged over the entire area of a region – such as a federal state or Germany as a whole. Depending on the parameter, the time period can be selected from months through seasons to the entire year.
The area averages are calculated analogous to the routine of the German Meteorological Service (DWD). To do so, the measurements of many weather stations are transferred spatially onto a grid and then averaged over the respective region. This produces a representative value for the entire area that balances out individual station outliers and makes regions of different size and station density comparable. Whether the area averages come directly from the DWD or were calculated by us analogous to the DWD routine is shown in the header of the map.
Method
KMW area averages are calculated analogous to the routine used by the DWD. To do this, the daily, monthly and yearly values of the stations are interpolated onto a 0.1° grid. A sufficient number of representative values must be available within a certain radius. Finally, all grid points within a region (Germany, federal states) are averaged and output. Nevertheless, there may occasionally be deviations from the DWD values. As soon as the DWD updates its area values, they will be displayed here.
Anomalies and records
For each parameter, you can display different values such as anomalies or records. These are briefly explained below. You can view anomalies for different climate reference periods. A climate reference period is always 30 years. For the current year, we show the daily reference for some parameters (note in header). For all other time periods, the anomaly always refers to the total period (entire month, etc.).
Absolute: The absolute area average in the respective unit such as degrees Celsius, days, etc.
Anomaly: The anomaly (deviation) of the area average in relation to the selected climate reference period. Anomalies for temperatures are strictly speaking given in Kelvin (here K = °C).
Record max: The absolute and maximum record area average for the selected parameter and period. Example: Temperature average + year: you see the region-wide warmest year. Example: Ice days + February: you see the maximum number of ice days in the area average of a February.
Record min: The absolute and minimum record area average for the selected parameter and period. Example: Precipitation sum + summer: you see the region-wide driest summer. Example: Ice days + February: you see the minimum number of ice days in the area average of a February.
Dev. record max: The deviation from the record maximum of the area average for the selected parameter and period. We have set this up additionally to identify new records early, especially in ongoing months and seasons. Example: Temperature average + seasonal values + 2018 + summer: you see how far the area average of summer 2018 was from the absolute record (warmest summer). If you see the value 0, it was the warmest summer. If you look at data for the current and ongoing summer, values above 0 can also occur. In that case it would be a new record at the current time.
Dev. record min: The deviation from the record minimum of the area average for the selected parameter and period. We have set this up additionally to identify new records early, especially in ongoing months and seasons. Example: Temperature average + seasonal values + 1962 + summer: you see how far the area average of summer 1962 was from the absolute record (coldest summer). If you see the value 0, it was the coldest summer. If you look at data for the current and ongoing summer, values below 0 can also occur. In that case it would be a new record at the current time.

Here the daily minimum temperatures are first averaged over the selected period and then over the entire region. You can see and compare, for example via the "anomaly", whether the daily minimum temperatures in the region have a positive or negative deviation. Precipitation SumThe area-averaged accumulated precipitation of the region over the entire selected period.
Sunshine Duration SumThe area-averaged accumulated sunshine duration of the region over the entire selected period.
For the current time periods of year/season/month, we use the satellite sunshine duration of the individual climate stations to generate area averages of sunshine duration based on more spatially comprehensive values.

Growing Degree DaysThe so-called "growing degree days" is a special heat sum used to determine the sustained start of vegetation. To calculate it, all positive daily mean temperatures since the beginning of the year are summed up. However, these are weighted by month: in January the daily mean is multiplied by the factor 0.5, in February by 0.75. From March onwards, the full value is included. When the growing degree days reach the threshold of over 200°C, sustained vegetation growth has begun. The area average indicates the growing degree days averaged over the region. In Central Europe, this determines the date for the start of field work. This is also referred to as the beginning of the agronomic spring, which often coincides with the beginning of forsythia flowering.
